About

Gathoni // Wanjiku is a performance duo consisting of writer/artist Gathoni wa Wairura and artist/performer/actor Wanjiku Victoria Seest. Their artistic collaboration was initiated in 2021 with an invitation from producer Julienne Doko to create an exhibition/performance piece. This culminated in the collaborative performance piece Blinkered that premiered at Den Frie Udstillingsbygning as part of Embodied Journeys in 2023. During their Moving Identities trajectory Gathoni // Wanjiku closely collaborate with singer and musician Maria Thandie and producer Anne-Mai Slot Vilmann.

With Invisible Faces, Gathoni // Wanjiku explores the living, raw experiences of African women in Europe, particularly women who live or have lived in violent relationships, how they ended up in them, and how they cope and resist. The piece navigates personal stories and situations that slowly become suffocating. If women reach out for help, what oppressive systems do they have to navigate to get support? Through an intersectional feminist lens, their work explores themes of love and belonging, identity and Immigration.

Starting next year, the theatre makers will translate their material into a theatre performance, using power and humour to highlight the complexity of these themes and experiences.
